Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa

President of Notre Europe and former Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank

Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa President of Notre Europe, a think tank dedicated to European unity and has been Minister of Economy and Finance in the Italian Government from May 2006 to May 2008. Previously, he was a Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank from 1998 to May 2005 and Chairman of the IASC Foundation (International Accounting Standard Committee) in 2005-2006.

His earlier appointments include: Chairman of Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB, 1997-1998), Deputy Director General of the Banca d’Italia (1984-1997), and Director-General for Economic and Financial Affairs at the Commission of the European Communities (1979-1983).

His past functions also include: Joint Secretary to the Delors Committee for the study of European Economic and Monetary Union (1988-1989); Chairman of the Banking Advisory Committee of the Commission of the European Communities (1988-1991); of the Working Group on Payment Systems of the Central Banks of the European Community (European Monetary Institute) (1991-1995); of the Basle Committee on Banking Supervision (1993-1997); of the European Regional Committee of IOSCO (1997-1998); of the FESCO (Forum of the European Securities Commissions) (1997-1998); of the G10 Committee on Payments and Settlement Systems ( 2000-2005).

He has been a Member of the Group of Thirty since 1979; is Member of the Advisory Board of the Institute for International Economics (IIE). He has been President of the International Center for Monetary and Banking Studies (Geneva) and Senior Adviser and Advisory Board Member of Promontory Financial Group, LLC.

He graduated from the Luigi Bocconi University, Milan, Italy, in 1966 and received a Master of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1970). He served as Artillery Officer. He holds five honorary degrees.

He is the author of numerous publications. Recent books include ‘The Euro and its Central Bank’ (MIT Press, 2004), ‘Regulating Finance’ (Oxford University Press, 2004) and ‘Europe, a Civil Power’ (The Federal Trust, 2004).

He is Cavaliere di Gran Croce della Repubblica Italiana.
