Stephanie Flanders

Stephanie replaced Evan Davis as the BBC's Economics Editor in Spring 2008

Prior to that she was the Economics Editor for BBC2's Newsnight programme from 2002. She often appears on other BBC television and radio programmes, including a Panorama on the state of the UK economy in which which she was filmed touring the country by bicycle. She has also written for the comment and features pages of the Financial Times, The Sunday Times, the Sunday Telegraph, the Observer, the Guardian, The Daily Mail and Prospect.

She was named Political Journalist of the Year 2007 at the Women in Public Life Awards awards, and Broadcast Journalist of the Year at the Work Foundation's Workworld Awards for 2006.

Stephanie, whose father, Michael, was one half of the 1960s musical double act, Flanders & Swann, is a seasoned economic commentator and policy practitioner, having working for elite organizations in both capacities in the UK and in the US.

She began her career as an economist at the London Business School and the Institute for Fiscal Studies. She went on to become a leader writer and columnist at the Financial Times.

She left the FT in 1997 to become speech-writer and special advisor to US Treasury Secretaries Robert Rubin and Lawrence Summers during the Clinton Administration, where she was involved in the management of emerging market crises in Asia, Russia and Latin America, and the reform of global economic development policy.

She left Washington in 2001 to become a correspondent at the New York Times. She subsequently served as principal editor of the United Nations' 2002 Human Development Report.

Stephanie was educated at St Paul's Girls' School, Balliol College, Oxford and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Stephanie has extensive experience chairing large public events. She is a spirited moderator for corporate events and panel discussions. And she is an expert speaker on global and domestic economic issues for both specialist and more general audiences, including events hosted by the CBI, Mckinsey & Associates and the London Review of Books. She is the regular MC for the annual British Bus Industry Awards and the annual conference of the Institute for the Chartered Accountants of England and Wales.
