Alena V. Ledeneva
Author of How Russia Really Works
Alena V. Ledeneva is Professor of Politics and Society at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London, UK. She studied Economics at the Novosibirsk State University (1986) and Social and Political Theory at the University of Cambridge (Newnham College, M.Phil.1992; Ph.D.1996). She’s been a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at New Hall College at Cambridge in 1996-1999; a Senior Fellow at the Davis Center, Harvard University (2005); and a Simon Professor at the University of Manchester (2006).
She is author of books including How Russia Really Works (Cornell University Press, 2006) and Russia’s Economy of Favours (Cambridge University Press, 1998) and numerous articles, as well as co-editor of Bribery and Blat in Russia (Macmillan, 2000) and Economic Crime in Russia (Kluwer Law International, 2000).
Her expertise is on corruption; informal economy; economic crime; informal practices in corporate governance; role of networks and patron-client relationships in Russia and other postcommunist societies.
Prof Ledeneva is a consultant and speaker to international organisations and businesses such as the EBRD, OECD, NATO, EU, EC as well as global and local think tanks eg Transparency International, Open Democracy, Centre for European Reforms, the Foreign Policy Centre, Social Market Foundation etc.
She is the co-director of the Russia Programme at the Centre for European Reform, EU-London and a member of the International Advisory Board of Romanian Journal of Political Science, the Advisory Board to the John Smith Memorial Trust, Westminster, London, the international expert group Valdai Discussion Club, Moscow to mention just a few.
